Radiofrequency Ablation for SI Joint Pain Works
Radiofrequency ablation for spinal joint pain works tremendously well. Over the last few years, sacroiliac joint pain has been treated as well with radiofrequency ablation with excellent results. The treatment was initially brought into play for neck pain along with low back pain. Now it is finding a place in the sacroiliac region due to multiple studies showing excellent outcomes.
One of the most impressive studies came out of John Hopkins University involving 28 patients who diagnosed SI joint pain with a single injection of numbing medicine into the painful joint. The study consisted of randomizing the patients into those receiving the radiofrequency versus the other group receiving a placebo procedure.
The patients were followed for over six months and it was found that over half of the patients received 50% or more pain relief and functional improvement in after six months. In the placebo group non-experience benefit after one month.
This study is a landmark in the treatment of SI joint pain, as typically 15 to 25% of low back pain is due to a sacroiliac joint problem.
If you are experiencing low back pain, it may be due to a sacroiliac joint problem or due to facet arthritis. Either way, radiofrequency ablation may help considerably with long term pain relief.
