Chiropractic Care for Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches result in periodic episodes of intense head-splitting pain. This condition is a neurologic condition that is one of the most painful types of headaches.

They often strike in cyclical patterns that can go on for weeks. The person will have frequent bouts of cluster headaches and then they will stop for a period. Phoenix chiropractic treatment can be very helpful in minimizing the resultant pain and allow patients to work, play socialize, and sleep better.

Doctors do now know why cluster headaches occur. They may be related to the hypothalamus, they may be linked to seasonal changes, or a by-product of spinal misalignment, called vertebral subluxations.

Some patients report that their headaches are triggered by certain stimuli, although these triggers do not seem to play a significantly large role in these cluster headaches. Drinking alcohol beverages, smoking tobacco, specific food products, stress and anxiety, and bright lights have all been named as triggers in producing headaches.

Symptoms include a sharp burning pain that often starts during sleep. The pain is often centered on one eye and may radiate to the center of the head and then to other parts of the head. The person may have a flushed face along with a runny nose. Attacks may last from 15 minutes to several hours. The person may have attacks for every day during the cluster period for weeks and then no attacks for the next several months.

For some people phoenix chiropractors care can alleviate the debilitating effects of cluster headaches and help improve a patient’s quality of life. A care plan begins with a thorough examination during which a chiropractor evaluates the patient to learn about the history, symptoms, and any triggers that may lead to cluster headaches.

The phoenix chiropractor may then tailor a customized treatment plan that best fits the patients’ needs. A chiropractor may recommend a variety of treatment options including spinal adjustments and stretches to relieve spinal misalignment. A scottsdale chiropractor may also recommend other techniques such as stretches, heat, acupuncture, nutritional supplements, and also spinal decompression therapy. Muscle work and massage therapy may be beneficial as well.

The goal of treatment is to help the patient minimize the duration and frequency of the cluster headaches. Phoenix chiropractic treatment is a safe and noninvasive form of care that may be extremely beneficial for patients experiencing these headaches. A continued treatment plan may be recommended to ensure longer lasting relief.
