Stem Cell Injections at the Arizona Pain Stem Cell Institute

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE IS FINALLY… HERE. COULD A STEM CELL INJECTION BE THE REVOLUTION IN PAIN MANAGEMENT?

The Arizona Pain Stem Cell Institute is open, and is now offering multiple options for stem cell injections. Regenerative medicine aims to repair and fix damaged tissue, rather than simply mask pain. The “Holy Grail” of pain management is to actually repair cartilage damage, tendon and ligament injuries rather than provide a proverbial “band aid.”

These pain management stem cell injections are designed with the potential for disease modification, not just back pain symptom management. That is the goal of stem cell injection treatments, and Arizona Pain Stem Cell Institute is now offering three different types of injections along with two industry subsidized research projects.

STEM CELL INJECTION RESEARCH PROJECTS

AmnioMatrixTM Low Back Pain Study:

Patients suffering from moderate to severe (?5 out of 10) chronic low back pain for at least three months caused by degeneration of facet joint tissues will receive a single injection of AmnioGenic Flow TherapyTM. Patients’ pain, daily functioning, and medication usage will be assessed before treatment and again at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks after treatment.

This is a non-randomized, prospective clinical study that is industry-subsidized. It is not an FDA clinical trial. This means all patients receive the injection substance. It is industry subsidized, reducing typical patient fees by approximately 40%.

AmnioMatrixTM Upper/Lower Extremity Pain Study:

Patients suffering from moderate to severe (?5 out of 10) chronic pain of an upper extremity joint (e.g., shoulder) or lower extremity joint (e.g., knee) for at least three months caused by degeneration of SI or facet joint tissues will receive a single injection of AmnioGenic Flow TherapyTM.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy Spine & Extremity Injection Study

PRP Therapy involves taking blood from a patient’s arm similar to a simple blood draw. The blood is then placed into a centrifuge machine, and after approximately ten minutes the middle layer produced contains concentrated platelets and growth factors.

Platelet rich plasma treatment is a very exciting procedure, and it is discussed in detail on THIS PAGE. The Arizona Pain Stem Cell Treatment Institute offers the procedure to benefit the following conditions:

  • Spinal facet joint arthritis pain
  • Hip, Knee, and Shoulder Arthritis Pain
  • Rotator Cuff Bursitis & Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Medial & Lateral Epicondylitis (Golfer’s & Tennis Elbow)
  • SI Joint Pain

Three professional sports leagues have approved the use of PRP and numerous professional athletes such as Tiger Woods, Hines Ward, Dwight Howard and Troy Polamolu have benefited from PRP injections.

This is a non-randomized, prospective clinical study that is industry-subsidized. It is not an FDA clinical trial. This means all patients receive the injection substance.

ADDITIONAL STEM CELL THERAPY INJECTION SERVICES

Bone Marrow Derived Stem Cell Injections

Bone Marrow will be harvested from the patient’s iliac crest (hip bone) and placed into a centrifuge machine to generate a stem cell rich concentrate.Stem Cell Therapy

This stem cell concentrate is then injected into the target area in the same setting. The treatment is used for pain conditions such as arthritis for the knee, hip, shoulder, and sacroiliac joints.

Treatment is performed as an outpatient in Arizona Pain’s ambulatory procedure center with Board Certified pain management doctors.

Regenerative medicine represents the cutting edge in pain management. Rather than simply managing pain symptoms, the objective of regenerative medicine is to modify the disease process itself while helping with pain at the same time.

FAQ’S ON REGENERATIVE MEDICINE AND STEM CELLS

WHAT ARE THE DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS FOR STEM CELL INJECTIONS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT?

Non-Steroidal – one of the drawbacks to steroid is that it can only be injected so often due to concern over potential adrenal gland dysfunction. Steroids work well for pain relief and can help patients avoid surgery. But there is some concern over cartilage damage with repetitive injections. Steroids are contra-indicated in young athletes whose growth plates are still active. The goal of the non-steroidal stem cell injections is to replace a potentially harmful substance with cell regeneration therapy. The hope is patients will experience pain relief such as with steroid but with no limitations on how often it can be injected and the therapy has potential for cell regeneration at the same time.

Potential Cell Regeneration – Current injection substances in pain management treatment are for suppressing symptoms and do not alter the state of the disease. This means they help with pain relief, which is very helpful. But they do not reverse degenerative joint disease, fix cartilage defects, or repair intervertebral discs. A better approach would be an injection therapy that not only helps with pain relief, but has regenerative potential in curing the underlying cause of the pain. Stem cell injection treatments have been shown in animal studies to do this and alter the course of disease. In a rabbit study, the animals were injected with a stem cell rich substance into their knees. Cartilage defects showed dramatic improvement with regeneration of cartilage, and this cartilage was real. Not fibrocartilage.

Lasting Pain Relief – Pain management injections have excellent results on the whole. However, one of the issues is that steroid and numbing medicine wears off. Subsequently a person’s pain typically returns with a necessary repeat injection becoming necessary. The potential with stem cell injections is to provide repair potential of damaged tissue (soft tissue or bone), and also potentially reverse the effects of arthritis. What better way to provide lasting pain relief than to have a stem cell injection that might repair injured tissue?

WHAT RESEARCH BACKS UP THE POTENTIAL FOR CELL REGENERATION?

Undifferentiated stem cell injections may produce a regenerative effect on injured tissue or joints with degenerative joint disease.

Murphy et al. reported that injected adult mesenchymal stem cells intra-articularly stimulated regeneration of meniscal tissue in an osteoarthritis-induced rabbit model. Agung et al. reported that intra-articular injected mesenchymal stem cells mobilized into injured tissues, including the ACL, meniscus and cartilage in a rat model, and contributed to their regeneration. Current studies have demonstrated successful repair of full thickness cartilage defect in vivo through intra-articular injection of mesenchymal stem cells.

HAVE COMPLICATIONS BEEN REPORTED WITH STEM CELL INJECTIONS INTO THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM?

The answer is yes, but not with the kind being used at the Arizona Pain Stem Cell Institute There are two different types of stem cell injection cells. The first is pluripotential, and the second is mesenchymal. Cells that are pluripotential have been shown in numerous studies at times to not know when to stop replicating. They have formed tumors as a result. Mesenchymal stem cells have not lead to this problem. The stem cells being utilized by Arizona Pain are mesenchymal stem cells.
